The Ducati 1098 is a sport bike built by Ducati from 2007 to 2009 in three versions: the 1098, the 1098 S and the 1098 R. It replaced the 999 and was itself replaced by the 1198 in 2009, although the 1098R stayed in production that year.

History of the Ducati 1098

The 1098 was shown at EICMA in 2006 and went on sale in 2007 as the replacement for the 999. Its design deliberately moved away from the Pierre Terblanche 999, which had divided Ducati riders, and back towards the 916–996–998 family drawn by Massimo Tamburini: the single-sided swingarm, the twin exhausts under the seat and the pair of symmetrical, horizontally placed headlights all returned.

The engine was an evolution of the 999 unit, called Testastretta Evoluzione, and remained the classic Ducati 90-degree L-twin with desmodromic valve gear. With the larger displacement and other changes it produced a claimed 160 hp, and Ducati claimed the highest torque-to-weight ratio of any production sport bike at the time of release.

The 1098 also changed the rules of the Superbike World Championship. Ducati argued that the 999 engine was at the end of its life and that V-twins were limited to 1000 cc, and lobbied the FIM for a larger capacity for twins. In June 2007 the FIM raised the limit to 1200 cc for 2008, and Ducati gave up the extra engine modifications that twins had been allowed. The 1098RS and 1198RS racers won the world title in 2008 with Troy Bayliss and in 2011 with Carlos Checa.

Design and features

  • Tamburini cues: single-sided swingarm, under-seat exhausts and horizontal twin headlights.
  • Testastretta Evoluzione: the 999 engine enlarged to 1098 cc and 160 hp.
  • Traction control: the 1098R was the first production motorcycle with Ducati Traction Control.
  • Racing kit: the R was sold with a Termignoni kit that lifted output from 180 to 190 hp.

Ducati 1098 versions

  • 1098 (2007): the base model.
  • 1098 S: forged Marchesini wheels, Öhlins suspension and steering damper, and the DDA data logger.
  • 1098 S Tricolore: the S with green, white and red paint recalling the 1985 750 F1.
  • 1098 R (2007): the homologation special with a 1198 cc engine, 180 hp, slipper clutch and traction control.
  • 1098 R Bayliss Limited Edition: 500 bikes in Bayliss race colours with his number 21.

The 1098 sat between the 999 it replaced and the 1198 that followed it, and it shared its bodywork with the smaller 848. More Ducatis are in the Ducati collection.
