The Argentine racing driver Alejandro de Tomaso founded the company in Modena in 1959. It began with sports prototypes and racing cars, including a Formula One car for Frank Williams Racing Cars in 1970, then built sports and luxury cars, most notably the Ford-powered, Italian-bodied Mangusta and Pantera. Ford bought 84 percent in 1971 and sold it back in 1974.
De Tomaso owned Maserati from 1976 to 1993 and Moto Guzzi from 1973 to 1993. The company went into liquidation in 2004. The brand was bought in 2014 by Hong Kong–based Ideal Team Ventures, which showed the retro-styled P72 in 2019.
