Christian von Koenigsegg got the idea to build his own car as a boy after watching the animated film The Pinchcliffe Grand Prix, and he founded the company in 1994 at the age of 22. It started in Olofström and moved to Ängelholm in the early 2000s. After a fire in 2003 it took over an abandoned air base and converted a fighter-jet hangar into its factory.
The CC8S, introduced in 2002, was the first street-legal car, and the CCX of 2006 used an engine built in-house for worldwide approval. The Agera won the BBC Top Gear Hypercar of the Year award in 2010, and the Agera RS reached a two-way average top speed of 447 km/h (277.8 mph) in 2017. Koenigsegg also developed the Freevalve camless engine and the Light Speed Transmission.
