Koenigsegg CCXR: the ethanol hypercar

The Koenigsegg CCXR was the flex-fuel version of the CCX, presented as a more environmentally friendly hypercar. On E85 or E100 ethanol its twin-supercharged V8 produced 1,018 PS, and in 2008 it was offered as the limited CCXR Edition.

History of the Koenigsegg CCXR

Ethanol instead of petrol

The CCXR was a more environmentally friendly version of the CCX. It was powered by the same engine, converted to use E85 and E100 ethanol fuel as well as standard 98 octane petrol. The conversion required modified fuel injectors, upgraded fuel lines and piston rings and a higher boost setting on the superchargers. In standard form the bodywork of the CCXR featured heavily optimised aerodynamics, with optional diffusers to enhance airflow, including an optional front splitter with an aerodynamic nolder.

Why it was more powerful

When run on ethanol, output rose to 1,018 PS at 7,000 rpm and 1,060 N·m at 5,600 rpm. This was a direct result of the cooling properties of ethanol in the engine’s combustion chambers together with the added boost made possible by ethanol’s higher octane rating compared with petrol. Because ethanol has a lower specific energy content, the CCXR burns slightly more fuel than the CCX, with combined consumption of 22 L/100 km on the EU cycle.

CCXR Edition

At the 2008 Geneva Motor Show Koenigsegg presented the CCX Edition and the CCXR Edition, both with a remapped 4.8-litre twin-supercharged V8 and limited to two and four units respectively. The CCX Edition’s engine was raised to 900 PS on normal gasoline and 940 N·m, while the CCXR Edition kept the CCXR ratings. The Edition cars were more track-oriented than the standard models, with stiffer springs and anti-roll bars, new dampers and a lowered chassis, a bare carbon body, unique 11-spoke aluminium wheels, a unique rear wing and a larger front splitter and side winglets, which together produce 350 kg of downforce at 250 km/h. Inside there were colour-matched leather carpets, Koenigsegg Edition side step plates and an Edition chronograph instrument cluster; carbon fibre wheels, a rearview camera and satellite navigation or Bluetooth came as standard.

Design and features

  • Flex fuel: runs on E85 and E100 ethanol or 98 octane petrol, with higher boost on ethanol.
  • Uprated fuel system: modified injectors, upgraded fuel lines, uprated piston rings and higher supercharger boost.
  • Ethanol cooling: the fuel’s cooling effect in the combustion chambers allows more power.
  • Aerodynamics: optimised bodywork with optional rear diffusers and a front splitter with an aerodynamic nolder.
  • Edition package: bare carbon body, lowered chassis, 11-spoke wheels and a fixed rear wing on the 2008 Edition.

Koenigsegg CCXR versions

  • CCXR: the standard flex-fuel car with 1,018 PS on ethanol.
  • CCXR Edition (2008): 4.8-litre engine, track suspension, bare carbon body, limited to four cars.
  • CCXR Special Edition: a further limited edition shown at Geneva in 2008.

The CCXR was the ethanol sister of the CCX and was replaced in the range by the Agera R, which also ran on E85. More Koenigseggs are in the Koenigsegg collection.
