Koenigsegg Agera R: the 439 km/h Agera

The Koenigsegg Agera R was the flex-fuel version of the Agera, presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2011. Running on E85 it produced up to 1,140 PS, and in September 2011 it set six world land speed records for a production car at Ängelholm.

History of the Koenigsegg Agera R

Geneva 2011

The Agera R made its debut at the March 2011 Geneva Motor Show in a Speed Racer livery and on specially developed Michelin tyres. It used the Agera’s in-house 5.0-litre twin-turbo V8, which weighed only 197 kg thanks to a carbon fibre inlet manifold and aluminium construction. On ordinary fuel it produced 960 PS at 6,900 rpm and 1,100 N·m at 4,000 rpm; running on E85 raised the output further. The gearbox was a CIMA seven-speed dual-clutch with paddle shifters, the first dual-clutch transmission with only one input shaft: the second clutch slows the shaft during upshifts so the next gear synchronises sooner.

Records at Ängelholm

On 2 September 2011, during test sessions in Ängelholm, the Agera R broke six world land speed records for a production car, among them 0–300 km/h in 14.53 seconds and 0–300–0 km/h in 21.19 seconds. Its stability was shown by Koenigsegg test driver Robert Serwanski, who was filmed braking from 300 km/h to a stop with his hands off the steering wheel. The car could pull 1.60 G in corners, a combination of mechanical balance and grip from the Michelin Supersport tyres.

2013 update

The 2013 version of the Agera R premiered at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. It brought carbon fibre wheels, enhanced aerodynamics and engine upgrades that lifted output to 1,140 PS at 7,100 rpm and 1,200 N·m at 4,100 rpm on E85 biofuel. Koenigsegg’s flex fuel sensor technology let the ECU respond to fuel quality and alcohol content, reducing power to 960 PS on standard low-octane fuel to protect the engine. The Agera range ended in July 2018, when the two final edition cars were unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed; the Jesko succeeded it in 2019.

Design and features

  • Adaptive rear wing: spring-loaded rather than hydraulic, it compensates for headwind and tailwind and produces 300 kg of downforce at 250 km/h.
  • Wing pylons: they also help extract hot air from the engine bay.
  • Carbon fibre body and chassis: the body is impregnated carbon fibre and Kevlar, the chassis a carbon fibre tub with aluminium honeycomb and integrated fuel tanks.
  • Doors: the trademark dihedral synchro-helix actuation doors.
  • Wheels and tyres: forged aluminium centre-lock wheels, 19 inches at the front and 20 at the rear, on Michelin Super Sport tyres rated for up to 420 km/h.
  • Flex fuel: on the 2013 car a flex fuel sensor let the ECU adjust power to the fuel quality.

Koenigsegg Agera R versions

  • Agera R (2011–2014): the original E85 car with 960 PS on petrol.
  • 2013 Agera R: carbon fibre wheels, revised aerodynamics and 1,140 PS at 7,100 rpm on E85, with 1,200 N·m at 4,100 rpm.
  • Agera S (2013–2014): for markets without E85, with the R’s dynamic wing but 1,030 PS on low-octane petrol.
  • One:1 (2014–2015): the extreme version presented at Geneva in 2014, built in six cars.
  • Agera RS: in 2017 it became the world’s fastest production car, with a GPS-verified two-way average of 447 km/h and a fastest straight-line run of 458 km/h.

The Agera succeeded the CCX and CCXR, and the CCR came before them. More Koenigseggs are in the Koenigsegg collection.
