Vauxhall was founded in 1857 by Alexander Wilson as a maker of pumps and marine engines, and was renamed Vauxhall Iron Works after Andrew Betts Brown bought it in 1863. The first car was built in 1903 and the name Vauxhall Motors was adopted in 1907.
General Motors bought the company in 1925, and Bedford commercial vehicles were added as a subsidiary in 1930. Since 1980 Vauxhall models have been largely identical to Opel cars; the marque joined the PSA Group in 2017 and Stellantis in January 2021.
