History of the Tomos Cross 50

Cross 50 Junior and Senior

The Cross 50 Junior of 1973 was the predecessor of the CTX 80. Its competition version, the Cross 50 Senior, was developed alongside it. The two were the work of constructor Janez Imperl and designer Čedomir Vučić.

The Cross models used frames of round steel tubes. When Tomos developed the CTX 80 between 1988 and 1998, it kept the same basic construction but switched to square tubes: this is the most obvious difference between the CTX frame and the Cross frames, which were otherwise largely equivalent in design.

The platform and its descendants

The CTX 80 for the Yugoslav market was adapted from the Dutch-built NTX 50 and built on the frame basis of the Cross 50 Junior and Senior. On the same platform Tomos also built the NTX, AT 50, ATX 50 and BT 50, all of which reached the market earlier than the CTX.

Design and features

  • Predecessor of the CTX 80: the Cross 50 Junior of 1973 was the model from which the later CTX 80 was developed.
  • Competition version: the Cross 50 Senior was the racing counterpart of the Junior.
  • Round-tube frame: the Cross frames were made of round steel tubes, unlike the later square-tube CTX frame.
  • Influential design: constructor Janez Imperl and designer Čedomir Vučić shaped a platform used by several later Tomos models.

Tomos Cross 50 versions

  • Cross 50 Junior (from 1973): the standard enduro moped.
  • Cross 50 Senior: the competition version.
  • CTX 80 (1988–1998): the later enduro built on the Cross frame basis with square tubes.

The BT50 shared the same generation of Tomos engineering, and the APN was the road moped of the period. More Tomos mopeds are in the Tomos collection.
