History of the Suzuki XL-7
The bigger Suzuki 4×4
When Suzuki launched the second generation of its Vitara as the Grand Vitara in 1998, it added a still larger SUV alongside it: the XL-7, known in Japan as the Grand Escudo. That gave the range a model above the compact Grand Vitara, in the size class where families were buying their four-wheel drives.

A name that came back
The XL-7 nameplate has since been used on more than one generation of Suzuki SUV, always at the larger end of the range rather than on the compact models.
Design and features
- Larger than the Grand Vitara: the biggest Suzuki SUV of its generation.
- Grand Escudo in Japan: a separate name for the home market.
- Part of the Vitara family: developed as the larger member of the same range.
Suzuki XL-7 versions
- XL-7 / Grand Escudo: the model introduced in 1998.
The XL-7 is the larger relative of the Vitara and Grand Vitara, and shares the off-road approach of the Jimny. More Suzukis are in the Suzuki collection.
