History of the Suzuki Boulevard M109R

A flagship cruiser

The M109R was launched in 2006 as Suzuki’s biggest V-twin cruiser. It carried the Intruder M1800R name in some countries and the VZR1800 model code in Europe, continuing the Intruder line under the Boulevard banner.

The engine

At its heart is a 1,783 cc liquid-cooled 54-degree V-twin with four valves per cylinder, double overhead camshafts and electronic fuel injection through 56 mm throttle bodies. It produces 123 hp and 160 Nm, and uses two spark plugs per cylinder. The cylinder bores are lined with Suzuki’s Composite Electrochemical Material, which improves heat transfer, allows tighter piston-to-cylinder clearances and saves weight.

Classic sister

In 2008 Suzuki added the Boulevard C109R, a classic cruiser built around a detuned version of the same engine.

Design and features

  • Big V-twin: 1,783 cc and 123 hp, the largest engine in Suzuki’s cruiser range at the time.
  • SCEM-lined bores: a race-derived coating for better cooling and lighter construction.
  • Dual spark plugs: two per cylinder for more complete combustion.
  • Three names: Boulevard M109R, Intruder M1800R and VZR1800 depending on the market.

Suzuki Boulevard M109R versions

  • Boulevard M109R (2006): the original power cruiser.
  • Intruder M1800R / VZR1800: the same motorcycle under other market names.
  • Boulevard C109R (2008): a classic cruiser with a detuned version of the engine.

The M109R is the biggest member of the Intruder cruiser family, and the smaller Boulevard S40 sits at the other end of the range. More Suzukis are in the Suzuki collection.
