History of the Škoda Octavia

A new car for a new owner

Work on the Octavia began in 1992 with studies based on the Golf III platform. In 1993 Škoda chose the new group platform that would also underpin the Golf IV and the Audi A3, and prototypes were running by 1994. The design came from Škoda’s own development department, with Dirk van Braeckel responsible for the shape and Luc Donckerwolke contributing, and a Třebíč studio refined it. The car was revealed to the European Car of the Year jury on 4 April 1996 in the newly finished hall, production began on 3 September 1996 when President Václav Havel opened the plant, and the first generation went on sale for the 1997 model year. It came with an eight-valve 1.6, a 20-valve 1.8 and the 1.9 TDI of 90 PS, later joined by more powerful versions; the car was front-wheel drive, and from the 2000 facelift a Haldex-based four-wheel-drive version was offered with a bigger 63-litre tank and more ground clearance. The RS of 2000 used a 1.8-litre turbo of 132 kW, and 100 white WRC Replica cars were built in 2002. A lengthened L&K Long version of 2001 was made in 25 examples for state use.

The Tour and the second generation

After the second generation arrived in March 2004, the first-generation car continued as the Octavia Tour, and its production only ended on 10 November 2010 after 1,442,126 cars. In India the Octavia was launched in 2002 and sold 44,900 units, and the second-generation car was sold there as the Laura to distinguish it from the first. The second generation, Type 1Z, was designed by Thomas Ingenlath and Peter Wouda on the PQ35 platform and brought more rear legroom, added headroom and a wider range of engines; it was built in Mladá Boleslav, Vrchlabí, Bratislava, Shanghai and Kaluga. A facelift followed at the end of 2008, and the first-generation car briefly returned as the Octavia Tour II with the second-generation body and pre-facelift looks, before the Rapid replaced it in 2012.

Third and fourth generations

The third generation appeared at the end of 2012, was facelifted in 2017 and in August 2017 became the third best-selling car in Europe. The fourth generation was unveiled in Prague on 11 November 2019 and facelifted in February 2024. Throughout, the range has followed the same pattern: a liftback and a Combi estate, front- or four-wheel drive, and an RS version at the top, with the RS badge standing for Rally Sport. The fourth generation added the Octavia iV plug-in hybrid. In 1997 the first Octavia finished fourth in the European Car of the Year vote from 29 candidates.
