History of the Renault Twizy

Concept and launch

The Twizy debuted as a concept car at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, designed by Françoise Leboinne and Luciano Bove. In November 2010 Nissan announced a rebadged variant called the New Mobility Concept, and the car was also shown with Renault Samsung badging at the 2011 Seoul Motor Show, although it was branded as a Renault for production in South Korea. In May 2011 Renault announced it would build the Twizy and began taking reservations, and in March 2012 the car was released to the French market, followed a month later by several other European countries.

Buying and leasing

The Twizy was available in three models, and its sales price did not include the battery pack, which was leased for a monthly fee that covered roadside assistance and a battery replacement guarantee. In 2020 the car became available as a direct purchase in the United Kingdom.

Production moves and the end

The Twizy was originally manufactured in Valladolid, Spain, but production moved to Busan in South Korea in March 2019 to meet increased demand in Asia. In July 2023 it was announced that production would end in September 2023, with the new Mobilize Duo as its replacement.

Design and features

  • Quadricycle class: a light or heavy quadricycle depending on motor output.
  • Two power levels: 4 kW for 45 km/h or 13 kW for 80 km/h.
  • Battery leasing: the pack was leased separately, with assistance included.
  • Production shifts: from Valladolid in Spain to Busan in Korea in 2019.

Renault Twizy versions

  • Twizy 45: 4 kW, limited to 45 km/h.
  • Twizy 80: 13 kW, limited to 80 km/h.
  • Nissan New Mobility Concept: a rebadged version announced in 2010.

The Twizy sat below the Renault Zoe in Renault’s electric range, and its successor is the Mobilize Duo. More Renaults are in the Renault collection.
