History of the Renault Laguna

The first Laguna

Development of the first Laguna began in 1987, with design work under Patrick Le Quément starting in 1988, final approval in March 1989 and a design freeze by early 1990; road testing ran from 1991 to 1993. The car was unveiled in November 1993 and launched in January 1994 as the replacement for the Renault 21, initially only as a hatchback. At the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1995 an estate was added, known in some markets as the Laguna Sports Tourer, which replaced the Renault 21 Nevada and Savanna. It was launched with 1.8, 2.0 and 3.0 V6 engines, and a sports pack with a deep front spoiler, rear spoiler and alloy wheels was available.

A name with history

The production Laguna is unrelated to a two-seater roadster concept of the same name shown at the 1990 Paris Motor Show, and the name had earlier been used from 1973 to 1976 by Chevrolet for the top-of-the-line Chevelle Laguna.

Later generations

The second generation arrived in 2000 and the third was built from October 2007 until 2015, when the Laguna and the Latitude were replaced together by the Renault Talisman.

Design and features

  • Three bodies: hatchback, estate and coupé over the model’s life.
  • Le Quément styling: the first generation designed under Renault’s design chief.
  • Sports Tourer estate: the 1995 load carrier replacing the 21 Nevada.
  • Long life: 21 years and three generations in the large family class.

Renault Laguna versions

  • Laguna I (X56, 1994): the original hatchback, estate from 1995.
  • Laguna II (2000): second generation.
  • Laguna III (2007–2015): final generation.
  • Laguna Coupé: two-door version of the later range.

The Laguna replaced the Renault 21 and was replaced, with the Renault Latitude, by the Renault Talisman. More Renaults are in the Renault collection.
