History of the Peugeot Metropolis
Rival to the Piaggio MP3
The Metropolis was launched to compete with the Piaggio MP3 in the three-wheeled scooter class. Its front end has two tilting, independent wheels connected by a deformable parallelogram with double triangulation, two dynamic dampers and a single shock absorber mounted horizontally. As on the Piaggio, the two front wheels can be locked with a Roll Lock system at the press of a button next to the throttle, a mode that works only below 10 km/h.
The engine
The 400 cc Peugeot engine in the Metropolis was developed and built at the Mandeure plant in the Doubs. It is a four-stroke single-cylinder with four valves and injection, producing 37.2 hp.
Before production
Peugeot began thinking about a three-wheeled scooter as soon as the Piaggio MP3 appeared. At the 2008 Paris Motor Show it presented the HYmotion3 concept, a prototype with a roof and a hybrid petrol-electric powertrain, using a 125 cc supercharged engine from the Satelis compressor and two electric motors at the front adding 9 hp. In 2009 at EICMA it showed the HYbrid3 Evolution, which lost the roof but kept the hybrid drive with the combustion part enlarged to 300 cc, and could run on electric power alone.
Production
The definitive Metropolis was presented at EICMA in 2011, with dealership availability in the second half of 2012. In 2017 it was revised and adopted the Euro 4 standard. In March 2020 the 20,000th Metropolis left the Mandeure factory, and a third generation was presented on 8 September 2020, carrying the design language of Peugeot cars, the i-Connect features of the Peugeot Pulsion and the Euro 5 standard.
