The Peterbilt 335 was the second medium-duty conventional from the company, introduced in 2005. It sat above the 330 in the Class 6–7 range and borrowed its hood shape from the heavy 386, scaled down to suit the smaller truck.

History of the Peterbilt 335

The 335 arrived in 2005 as the heavier of Peterbilt’s two medium-duty conventionals. The 330 had been the first, and the 335 took the same approach a step further: it used a scaled-down version of the hood fitted to the 386, so the medium-duty truck carried the family look of the heavy aero models. Above it in the range sat the 340, a Class 7/8 truck.

The model was light enough for municipal and delivery work and heavy enough for vocational bodies, which made it the middle of the medium-duty range. In 2006 Peterbilt offered the 330 and 335 as diesel-electric hybrids, the first hybrid vehicles the company had built.

The 335 did not last long in the catalogue. In 2009 the medium-duty line was revised: the 335 and 340 were dropped and replaced by the 337 and 348, which took over the Class 7 and Class 7/8 positions with a single-piece windshield and updated equipment.

Design and features

  • Family hood: the scaled-down 386 hood tied the medium-duty 335 to the heavy aero trucks.
  • Class 6–7 range: a middle position between the light 330 and the heavier 340.
  • Hybrid option: the 335 was one of the first two hybrid Peterbilts, offered from 2006.
  • Short career: four years in the catalogue before the 337 and 348 replaced it.

Peterbilt 335 versions

  • 335 (2005–2009): the standard medium-duty conventional.
  • 335 Hybrid (2006): diesel-electric version.
  • 340: the larger related model in Class 7/8.
  • 337 (from 2009): the replacement model.

The lighter medium-duty model is the Peterbilt 330, and the model that replaced this one is the 348; the heavy truck whose hood it copied is the 386. More in the Peterbilt collection.
