History of the Nissan NV200

Concept and launch

The NV200 was first shown as a concept at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show and again at the 2008 Nissan Tenjin Motor Show, where it carried a remote control panel for a spider camera and equipment for organising and editing photographs on the move. The production van appeared at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show and was also shown at the 2010 Beijing International Automobile Exhibition. It was built on a modified version of Nissan’s B platform with fully independent strut front suspension on a separate subframe and a leaf-spring rear axle.

Japan

In Japan the NV200 replaced the older Nissan Vanette as the NV200 Vanette, on sale from 21 May 2009 in DX van, GX van and 16S wagon grades. In October 2010 the 16S wagon gave way to the 16X-2R and 16X-3R, with a VX grade in the same year. In 2022 the passenger version was improved and a camper-based MyRoom variant released. From 2011 to 2019 Mitsubishi sold badge-engineered versions as the Delica D:3 and Delica Van, with a 1.6-litre four; they were dropped in April 2019 because of poor sales.

North America

The NV200 began production at Nissan Mexicana’s Cuernavaca plant in 2013 for the North American market. By 2020 Nissan had captured only a small share of the American commercial van market, and production for North America ended in summer 2021.

Design and features

  • B platform base: a modified passenger-car platform under a van body.
  • Leaf-spring rear axle: chosen for load carrying.
  • Vanette successor: replaced the long-running Nissan Vanette in Japan.
  • Delica twins: sold by Mitsubishi as the Delica D:3 and Delica Van.

Nissan NV200 versions

  • NV200 Vanette (2009–): the Japanese version in DX, GX and wagon grades.
  • NV200 combi and passenger models: the European and Asian versions.
  • Mitsubishi Delica D:3 / Delica Van (2011–2019): badge-engineered twins.
  • NV200 North America (2013–2021): built at Cuernavaca.

The NV200 replaced the Vanette and sits between the Kubistar and the larger NV350. More cars are in the Nissan collection.
