History of the MAN 890 SG

The MAN 890 SG was an articulated bus presented at the beginning of the 1970s and based on the VöV rules for a standard city bus. It was essentially a development of the articulated MAN 890 UG-M16, with an underfloor engine between the front and middle axles and a semi-trailer built by Göppel in Augsburg. Because of the engine position this type of articulated bus had a higher floor than the two-axle standard buses and the pusher articulated buses that only became available in 1978, and it had a steered axle in the trailer.

Renaming and success

In 1972 MAN changed its type designations, and the 890 SG became the SG 192. The SG 192 was offered with the VöV city bus front as standard and later with the StÜLB front of the standard intercity bus, and it was also available as an intercity articulated bus of 16.4 or 18 metres with different door arrangements. Until the Mercedes-Benz O 305 G arrived in 1978, MAN was the only complete-bus maker offering a standard articulated bus, so the type was very successful with about 1,300 built. In 1980 the Magirus-Deutz SH 170 added another competitor. The SG 192 was replaced by the MAN SG 220 in 1978, and production ended in 1980.

Trolleybuses

In 1974 two trolleybuses were built for the Kaiserslautern trolleybus system on the basis of this type. They were also called SG 192, but their body came from Walter Vetter Karosserie- und Fahrzeugbau and the electrical equipment from Kiepe Elektrik. The two vehicles, numbered 122 and 123, ran until the Kaiserslautern trolleybus network closed in 1985 and were then scrapped. They were the first trolleybuses based on the VöV standard bus.

Design and features

  • Underfloor engine: the diesel sat between the front and middle axles, giving a higher floor than later pusher buses.
  • Göppel trailer: the articulated trailer came from Göppel in Augsburg and had a steered axle.
  • Very successful: about 1,300 built, helped by being the only standard articulated bus on the market until 1978.
  • Standard fronts: available with the VöV city front and later the StÜLB intercity front.

MAN 890 SG versions

  • 890 SG: the original name before 1972.
  • SG 192 with VöV front: the standard city version.
  • SG 192 with StÜLB front: the intercity-style front.
  • Intercity articulated bus: 16.4 m or 18 m with different doors.
  • Kaiserslautern trolleybuses: two 1974 vehicles with Vetter bodies and Kiepe equipment.

The 890 SG became the SG 192, which was replaced by the MAN SG220; the rigid standard bus of the period is the MAN SL200. More MAN buses are in the MAN collection.
