History of the Landini 8860

1988 and the series 80

The 1980s were years of steady expansion at Fabbrico. Landini had entered the specialist orchard market in 1982, launched the Serie 30 between 1982 and 1984 with the 4830, 5830, 6830, 7830 and 8830, and added the Vigneto series in 1986, which made the plant the exclusive supplier of specialist tractors for Massey Ferguson as well. In 1988 the company introduced the 60, 70 and 80 series of medium-power tractors with a 24+12 gearbox. The French history gives the extent of the series 80: from the 6880 of 65 hp to the 9880 of 95 hp. The 8860 sits inside that band.

The year of 13,000 tractors

In the same year the Fabbrico plant reached 13,000 units sold, a figure the Italian history attributes above all to the intermediate range—the class of general-purpose tractors to which the 8860 belongs. Higher up the catalogue the company updated the Large series between 1986 and 1989 with the 10000s MKII of 105 CV, the 13000 MKII of 130 CV and the 14500 MKII Turbo of 145 CV, machines that had been the first in Europe above 100 CV when the Large was launched in 1977.

After the series 80

The series 80 marked the end of an era in the ownership of the company. In 1989 Massey Ferguson sold 66 per cent of its shares in an attempt to repair its own finances, and Landini returned to independence, opening a French subsidiary, Landini Tracteurs S.A., in 1991. In 1994 the firm became part of the Morra group, which became Argo, and in January 1995 it bought Valpadana, a specialist in small farm machinery. In 2000 the whole range was renewed, with the Mythos, Gibli, Globus and Atlas replacing the series 80.

Design and features

  • Part of a wide series: the series 80 covered 65 to 95 hp, and the 8860 was one of its middle models.
  • 24+12 gearbox: the transmission introduced with the 60, 70 and 80 series in 1988.
  • Built in a record year: Fabbrico sold 13,000 tractors in 1988, largely from this intermediate range.
  • End of an ownership era: the series 80 was the last generation produced before Massey Ferguson sold its majority in 1989.

Landini 8860 versions

  • 8860: the model of this page, inside the 65–95 hp band of the series.
  • 6880 and 9880: the smallest and largest models of the series 80 as listed in the French history.
  • Serie 30 (1982–1984): the earlier family of 4830, 5830, 6830, 7830 and 8830.
  • Series 60 and 70: the companion ranges introduced together with the series 80.

The series 80 followed the 500 series generation, and in 2000 it was replaced by the Mythos, Gibli, Globus and Atlas. The specialist tractors of the same years are described with the Landini Rex. More Landini tractors are in the Landini collection.
