History of the KTM 990 Adventure

From the 950

The 990 Adventure succeeded the 950 Adventure, which KTM stopped producing in 2006. The engine evolved from the 950’s LC8 V-twin: the bore and stroke were increased from 100 mm x 60 mm to 101 mm x 62.4 mm, taking displacement to 999 cc, and the engine also received a revised camshaft. The carburettors of the 950 were replaced with electronic fuel injection, the change that most clearly separated the two generations.

Performance and equipment

The 999 cc V-twin produces around 78 kW (105 hp) and gives the 990 Adventure a top speed of around 123 mph (198 km/h). Brakes are Brembo two-channel ABS, except on the S and R versions, which have no ABS at all. The bike retains the LC8 architecture introduced with the 950, the 75-degree V-twin layout KTM developed in-house from 1998 on, with the engine mounted in the same frame family and using WP suspension as on the earlier Adventure models.

Place in the range

The 990 Adventure sat at the top of KTM’s dual-sport range, above the single-cylinder 690 models. Where the 690 Enduro R was built around a large single-cylinder engine in a light chassis, the 990 Adventure used the more powerful twin for long-distance travel and off-road touring. The S and R variants were the more off-road-focused members of the family, and they were the versions sold without ABS.

Design and features

  • Fuel injection: the key change from the carburetted 950.
  • 999 cc LC8: a larger bore and stroke plus a revised camshaft.
  • 105 hp: around 198 km/h top speed.
  • ABS as standard: Brembo two-channel ABS, deleted on the S and R.

KTM 990 Adventure versions

  • 990 Adventure: the standard model with Brembo two-channel ABS.
  • 990 Adventure S: without ABS.
  • 990 Adventure R: the off-road-oriented version, also without ABS.

The 990 replaced the 950 Adventure, and the single-cylinder touring alternative is the 690. More models are in the KTM collection.
