History of the JLG 450AJ

JLG Industries was founded in 1969, when John Landis Grove and two partners bought a small metal fabrication business in McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania. The team of twenty workers built the company’s first aerial work platform in 1970, and many of the design ideas of that original lift are still used in JLG products today. Scissor lifts followed in 1973, and production of them began at Bedford, Pennsylvania in 1979.

The boom lifts that include the 450AJ are the part of the range most associated with the JLG name. The company describes its boom-lift line as electric and engine-powered machines for steel mills, chemical plants, airports, convention centres, shipyards and heavy construction, with lift heights from 30 to 185 feet. JLG’s QuikStik boom design is quoted at 115 seconds from ground to elevation, and the Ultra Series booms carry an oscillating axle, which the company says is the only one in its boom class, together with full-time four-wheel drive.

In 2011 JLG introduced the 1500SJ, described as the first straight boom lift able to take workers to 150 feet without an oversize load permit; an overweight permit is still needed for highway transport. JLG has belonged to Oshkosh Corporation since late 2006. The company serves industrial, commercial, institutional and construction markets through distributors worldwide, and builds equipment in five plants in the United States and four more abroad, including Leicester in the United Kingdom, Fauillet in France, Leon in Mexico and Tianjin in China.

Design and features

  • Articulated boom: the 450AJ is an articulating aerial work platform, the type that can reach up and over obstacles rather than only in a straight line.
  • QuikStik boom design: JLG quotes a cycle of 115 seconds from ground to full elevation.
  • Ultra Series technology: an oscillating axle and full-time four-wheel drive give the booms mobility on rough ground.
  • Wide range: JLG boom lifts span lift heights from 30 to 185 feet, and the 1500SJ reaches 150 feet without an oversize permit.

JLG 450AJ versions

  • Articulated boom lifts: the type represented by the 450AJ.
  • Straight boom lifts: telescopic booms for maximum reach, including the 2011 1500SJ.
  • Ultra Series: booms with an oscillating axle and full-time four-wheel drive.
  • Electric and engine-powered versions: both power types are offered across the boom-lift range.

Other JLG machines in the collection include the G10-55A and G6-42A telehandlers. More are in the JLG collection.
