History of the Hyster S series

S1.0 to S1.6: the range in the video

The video below is titled ‘Paleteira Hyster S 1.0 a S1.6’, naming the S-prefix trucks and the models the range covers: S1.0 through S1.6. The clip is in Portuguese, from one of the markets where Hyster trucks are sold and supported, and it is the only record of these particular models in the collection.

1929: Willamette-Ersted in Portland

Hyster began in 1929 as the Willamette-Ersted Company in Portland, Oregon. The name is said to come from the Pacific Northwest logging trade of the late nineteenth century: when a load of lumber was ready to be moved a logger would shout ‘hoist ’er’, and according to the Hyster Company web page the phrase became a synonym for Hyster trucks. The company specialised in forklifts and other materials-handling equipment, and for a time was also a major maker of compaction machinery and road-rollers.

1989 and 2012: two changes of owner

NACCO Industries bought Hyster in 1989 and made it part of NACCO Materials Handling Group; in 2012 the materials-handling business was spun off as Hyster-Yale Materials Handling, Inc., which continues to market products under the Hyster brand. The home office remained in Portland, while production spread to Illinois, the Netherlands, China, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Craigavon in Northern Ireland and South Africa, with a specialist engineering department in Irvine, Scotland.
