The Hyster 2.50 is the metric-numbered lift truck shown in the photograph below, taken in Bueu. Like the rest of the range it comes from Hyster, the American materials-handling company founded in Portland, Oregon, in 1929 and now part of Hyster-Yale Materials Handling. There is no Wikipedia article on the model itself, so this page follows the company behind it.

History of the Hyster 2.50
2.50 in the photograph
The photograph by Bene Riobó shows a Hyster 2.50 forklift in Bueu. The 2.50 is one of two metric designations in this collection, the other being the smaller Hyster 1.50; the rest of the trucks are recorded under plain numbers such as 50, 60, 90 or 120.
1929: the logging name
Hyster was founded in 1929 as the Willamette-Ersted Company in Portland, Oregon. The name is said to come from a term used by logging workers in the Pacific Northwest at the end of the nineteenth century: when a load of lumber was ready to be transported, a logger would yell ‘hoist ’er’, and according to the Hyster Company web page the phrase became synonymous with Hyster trucks. The company specialises in forklifts and other materials-handling equipment, and its home office has stayed in Portland.
Plants, owners and the 2012 spin-off
Manufacturing has been spread across Berea, Danville, Peoria and Kewanee in Illinois, the Netherlands, China, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Craigavon in Northern Ireland and South Africa, with a specialist engineering department in Irvine, Scotland. NACCO Industries bought the company in 1989, and in 2012 the materials-handling business was spun off as Hyster-Yale Materials Handling, Inc., which continues to market products under the Hyster brand. Distribution is organised around North America, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and Asia-Pacific.
