Hyster 50: a counterbalance truck of the E45-70XN series

The Hyster 50 is a counterbalance lift truck. The Portuguese-language video below shows a Hyster of the E45-70XN series, whose numbers run from 45 to 70, so the 50 belongs to that family of trucks. Hyster was founded in Portland, Oregon, in 1929 and is today part of Hyster-Yale Materials Handling; no Wikipedia article covers the 50 itself.

History of the Hyster 50

The E45-70XN series

The video below is titled ‘Empilhadeira Hyster contrabalançada E 45 50 55 60 70 XN’, which names a counterbalance Hyster truck and the numbers of the series: 45, 50, 55, 60 and 70. The 50 recorded on this page therefore sits inside that family, between the 45 and the 55. The clip is in Portuguese, one of the markets where Hyster trucks are sold and supported.

1929: the name from the woods

Hyster began in 1929 as the Willamette-Ersted Company in Portland, Oregon. According to the Hyster Company web page, the name comes from a phrase used by loggers in the Pacific Northwest at the end of the nineteenth century; when a load of lumber was ready to be transported a logger would yell ‘hoist ’er’, and the term became synonymous with Hyster trucks. The company went on to specialise in forklifts and other materials-handling equipment.

Owners, plants and the split of 2012

NACCO Industries bought Hyster in 1989 and made it part of NACCO Materials Handling Group. In 2012 the materials-handling business was spun off as Hyster-Yale Materials Handling, Inc., which still markets products under the Hyster name. The home office remained in Portland, with plants in Illinois, the Netherlands, China, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Craigavon in Northern Ireland and South Africa, plus a specialist engineering department in Irvine, Scotland. Distribution is organised around North America, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and Asia-Pacific.
