History of the Hyster 60
A 60 under the hammer
The video below records a used Hyster 60 offered at an unreserved auction as lot Inv. 3376. It is a second-hand example, not a new machine, which is typical of how trucks of this age now circulate: they leave the first owner and are sold on to workshops, yards and small fleets.
1929: from Willamette-Ersted to Hyster
Hyster was founded in 1929 as the Willamette-Ersted Company in Portland, Oregon. The name is said to come from the Pacific Northwest logging trade: when a load of lumber was ready to be moved a logger would shout ‘hoist ’er’, and according to the Hyster Company web page the phrase became a synonym for Hyster trucks. The company specialised in forklifts and other materials-handling equipment, and for a time was also a prominent maker of compaction machinery and road-rollers.
1989 and 2012: two changes of owner
NACCO Industries bought the company in 1989, making it part of NACCO Materials Handling Group; in 2012 the materials-handling business was spun off as Hyster-Yale Materials Handling, Inc., which continues to market products under the Hyster brand. The home office stayed in Portland, while manufacturing spread to Illinois, the Netherlands, China, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Craigavon in Northern Ireland and South Africa, with a specialist engineering department in Irvine, Scotland.
