History of the Hyster Spacesaver

S7.0FT: the truck in the video

The video below describes a used 7-tonne Hyster forklift, model S7.0FT, under the Spacesaver name and with a diesel engine. Those are the only details of the truck recorded here: the clip is a dealer’s film of a second-hand machine, not a specification sheet.

1929: the logging name

Hyster was founded in 1929 as the Willamette-Ersted Company in Portland, Oregon. The name is said to derive from the Pacific Northwest logging trade of the late nineteenth century; when a load of lumber was ready to be transported a logger would yell ‘hoist ’er’, and according to the Hyster Company web page the phrase became synonymous with Hyster trucks. From there the company specialised in forklifts and other materials-handling equipment.

Plants, owners and the 2012 spin-off

The home office stayed in Portland while manufacturing spread to Berea, Danville, Peoria and Kewanee in Illinois, the Netherlands, China, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Craigavon in Northern Ireland and South Africa, with a specialist engineering department in Irvine, Scotland. NACCO Industries bought Hyster in 1989 and made it part of NACCO Materials Handling Group; in 2012 the materials-handling business was spun off as Hyster-Yale Materials Handling, Inc., which continues to market products under the Hyster brand.
