History of the Hyster 1150
1150 at work
The video below shows a Hyster 1150 working on the docks in Hawaii. The 1150 carries the highest number of the Hyster designations gathered in this collection, while the other trucks range from the metric 1.50 and 2.50 to plain numbers such as 50, 60, 90, 120 and 300.
1929: the logging name
Hyster was founded in 1929 as the Willamette-Ersted Company in Portland, Oregon. According to the Hyster Company web page, the name comes from the call loggers in the Pacific Northwest used at the end of the nineteenth century when a load of lumber was ready to be transported: ‘hoist ’er’. The phrase became synonymous with Hyster trucks, and the company went on to specialise in forklifts and other materials-handling equipment.
Plants, owners and the split of 2012
The home office stayed in Portland, with manufacturing in Berea, Danville, Peoria and Kewanee in Illinois, the Netherlands, China, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Craigavon in Northern Ireland and South Africa, plus a specialist engineering department in Irvine, Scotland. NACCO Industries bought the company in 1989 and folded it into NACCO Materials Handling Group; in 2012 the materials-handling business was spun off as Hyster-Yale Materials Handling, Inc., which still markets products under the Hyster name.
