History
The GAZ-53A, introduced in 1965 with a 4-tonne payload, was built until January 1983. The GAZ-53-12 took over from it and remained in production until the end of the GAZ-53 family in 1993. All variants of the family use a four-speed gearbox.
The GAZ-53 family was a common sight in Eastern Europe during its long production run. The GAZ-52 and GAZ-53 are told apart by their lighting, wheel rims and payload, and the GAZ-53-12 kept the same basic look of the family, with its vertically fluted grille and indicators above the headlamps.
