The GAZ-24-10 Volga was an updated version of the GAZ-24, built at the Gorky Automobile Plant (GAZ) from 1985 to 1992. It kept the GAZ-24 body with a new front end and simpler trim, and it was a temporary stop-gap before the GAZ-3102. This page covers the key figures, the history, the engines and variants, and the questions people ask most often.

History

When the GAZ-3102 entered limited production in 1981–82, GAZ hoped for a full upgrade of the line, but lobbying kept the older body in use. The GAZ-24-10 was a compromise: the GAZ-3102 silhouette in a simpler trim, with many chrome details, a “baleen” grille and black plastic bumpers.

In early 1985 the first cars left the line as “hybrids” with GAZ-24-10 mechanicals and GAZ-24 bodies, unofficially called GAZ-24M. Pure GAZ-24-10 cars followed in 1986. Production ended in 1992.

Design and features

  • Upgraded engine family, the ZMZ-402, which produced 100 hp (75 kW) and needed 92-octane petrol.
  • A simpler exterior than the GAZ-3102, with black plastic bumpers and a chrome-heavy grille.
  • The -10 suffix was used because the car was significantly different from the GAZ-24, although it was not a new model name.

Variants

  • GAZ-24-11: taxi version with 80-RON petrol.
  • GAZ-24-12: estate (station wagon).
  • GAZ-24-34: limited-production V8 model with the ZMZ-503.10 engine.
