History of the Citroën C4 Aircross

A crossover for the continent

The C4 Aircross was unveiled at Geneva in 2012, and in October 2011 it had already been confirmed that it would not be sold in the United Kingdom or Ireland, because the Peugeot 3008 was already on sale there. Its related Peugeot twin, the 4008, was sold in the same European countries and was likewise not offered in right-hand drive for Britain and Ireland. By January 2017 the C4 Aircross was on sale from Algeria and Argentina to Russia, South Africa and the Baltic states, but not in Britain.

Three trims

The range had three levels. Attraction offered seven airbags, manual air conditioning, an MP3/CD radio and electric mirrors; Comfort added cruise control, automatic climate control, fog lights and alloy wheels; and Exclusive brought a rear-view camera, GPS, heated electric front seats and 18-inch alloy wheels. The entry model was the 1.6i in Attraction finish, the diesel range started with the HDi 115 Attraction, and the top car was the HDi 150 Exclusive.

Recalls and the end

Cars sold between 1 June 2012 and 31 December 2013 were recalled in June 2017 over a suspected fault in the tailgate gas springs, and cars sold between 1 June 2012 and 29 November 2013 were recalled in September 2017 because water could fill the windscreen wiper motors and seize them. Production ended in April 2017 and the C5 Aircross replaced the car; it was unveiled at the 2017 Shanghai fair, shown at Frankfurt and at Geneva in March 2018, and went on sale in November 2018. In China the C4 Aircross name was used again from December 2018 to December 2020 for a long-wheelbase version of the C3 Aircross.

  • Diesel choice: HDi 115 and HDi 150, the latter in Exclusive trim.
  • Not for Britain: left-hand drive only, because of the Peugeot 3008.
