The Cadillac Escalade is a full-size luxury SUV and Cadillac’s first serious entry into the SUV market. It was introduced for the 1999 model year in answer to new luxury SUVs such as the Lincoln Navigator, Mercedes-Benz M-Class, Range Rover and Lexus LX, and went into production only ten months after it was approved.

History of the Cadillac Escalade
The name Escalade refers to the siege tactic of scaling defensive walls with ladders or siege towers. The vehicle itself was less romantic: the first-generation Escalade was essentially a badge-engineered GMC Yukon Denali, with Cadillac crests on the centre caps in place of GMC logos, a slightly different grille and smooth cladding instead of the Denali’s embossed panels. It was rushed to dealers to counter the Lincoln Navigator, and it was smaller than the Lincoln and less powerful, with a 5.7-litre Vortec V8 of 255 hp against the Navigator’s 300 hp.

A Cadillac inside
Where the Escalade differed from the GMC was mostly in the cabin: extra real wood on all four door panels and the steering wheel, imitation wood on the instrument panel, a colour-keyed steering column, a leather-wrapped column shifter and perforated leather seats with a Cadillac crest embroidered on the headrests. Standard equipment went well beyond other GM full-size SUVs, with 16-inch chrome-clad wheels, a seven-speaker Bose stereo with subwoofer, a six-CD changer, heated front and rear seats, automatic headlamps, front and rear Bilstein shock absorbers and OnStar. Only the rear doors and tailgate layout were left to the buyer to choose.
Five generations later
The Escalade has since gone through five generations and one facelift, and the Escalade ESV, for Escalade Stretch Vehicle, added a long-body version sold in North America, Russia and the Middle East. The fifth generation arrived in 2021 and was noted for its technology and driving assistance, and for its size: nearly two metres tall, it was criticised for being a hazard to pedestrians. On 8 August 2023 GM presented the Escalade IQ, an all-electric version and the third model in Cadillac’s electric line after the Celestiq and Lyriq, which went on sale in late 2024 for the 2025 model year from $130,000.
