History of the Alfa Romeo Alfasud Sprint

The Alfasud Sprint was presented to the press in September 1976 at Baia Domizia (Caserta) and shown at the Turin Motor Show in November. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, like the Alfasud on whose mechanicals it was based, it had a lower, more angular design with a hatchback (although with no folding rear seats). It was assembled together with the Alfasud at the Pomigliano d’Arco plant in southern Italy.

Under the bonnet was a new version of the Alfasud’s 1,186 cc four-cylinder boxer engine, stroked to 1,286 cc and developing 76 PS, mated to a five-speed gearbox. The interior was upholstered in dark brown Texalfa leatherette and tartan cloth, and options were limited to alloy wheels and a few other items. In May 1978 the Sprint received its first updates, both cosmetic and technical: the engines became a 79 PS 1.3 and an 85 PS 1.5 shared with the renewed Alfasud ti, and the earlier 1,186 cc unit remained exclusive to the Alfasud.

Design and features

  • Mechanicals: a boxer engine and the front-wheel-drive layout of the Alfasud.
  • Design: lower and more angular than the Alfasud, with a hatchback.

Alfa Romeo Alfasud Sprint versions

  • Alfasud Sprint (1976–1983): the first series.
