History of the Alfa Romeo GT
The GT was based on the Fiat C-platform with styling by Bertone. Bertone initially insisted on assembling the car at its own plant, but after a refusal from Alfa Romeo’s parent company Fiat, the GT was assembled at the Pomigliano plant instead.

The bodywork is in the classic coupé style but uses a hatchback two-door layout compared with earlier coupés like the GTV; with a full rear bench giving five seats rather than a 2+2 layout, the GT was advertised as a practical sports car.
Design and features
- Mechanicals: most mechanicals were taken directly from the 156 and 147.
- Interior: derived from the smaller 147, sharing its dashboard layout, functions, climate control and electrical system.
- Shared parts: the bonnet, wing mirrors and front wings came from the 147 GTA.
Alfa Romeo GT versions
- GT 1.8 TS and 2.0 JTS: the petrol four-cylinders.
- GT 1.9 MultiJet: the turbodiesel.
- GT 3.2 V6: the top of the range; our older “GT Treffen” page about a GT owners’ meeting is covered here.
More Alfa Romeo coupés are in our Alfa Romeo collection, for example the Brera and the Alfa Romeo 147.
