History of the Yamaha XT1200Z Super Ténéré

The XT1200Z was launched in 2010 as the largest model in Yamaha’s Ténéré line, a family of dual-sport motorcycles named after the Ténéré desert region in the south-central Sahara. It was designed for long-distance adventure riding rather than competition.

Its engine is a liquid-cooled four-stroke fuel-injected 1,199 cc parallel twin with a 270-degree crankshaft. Power goes through a six-speed gearbox and shaft drive, a combination chosen for durability on long trips. The bike also has multi-mode traction control, Yamaha’s Chip Controlled Throttle with programmes for off-road use, switchable engine mapping and combined brakes with ABS.

The launch models were badged First Edition and came with bash plates and aluminium panniers. Yamaha continued to sell the model as the Super Ténéré ES until the 2024 model year, when production of the XT1200 ended. The Worldcrosser version, with additional protective equipment, was part of the same range.
