History of the Yamaha SZR660
The SZR660 was built in Italy by Belgarda, the Italian Yamaha importer, between 1996 and 2001. It took the 659 cc single-cylinder engine of Yamaha’s XTZ660 Ténéré dual-purpose line and installed it in a light road-going chassis in the Supermono tradition, where a single-cylinder engine competes against lighter, simpler machines.

The engine uses a five-valve cylinder head with three intake valves and two exhaust valves. Yamaha designed it so that the smaller valves give a larger valve area at lower weight than a four-valve layout, allowing maximum intake flow and velocity.
Fuel is lifted from the tank by a pump mounted at the bottom and fed to twin carburettors. One is a slide carburettor and the other a butterfly type, and they operate sequentially through a manually adjustable system. That arrangement gave the SZR660 a distinctive character among small sport bikes, and the model remains a rare sight today.
Design and features
- Five-valve head: three intake and two exhaust valves for efficient gas flow.
- Supermono layout: a large single in a light sport chassis.
- Italian assembly: built by Belgarda, Yamaha’s Italian importer.
- Sequential carburettors: a slide and a butterfly carb working together.
Yamaha SZR660 versions
- SZR660 (1996–2001): the only production version.
The SZR660 shares its engine family with the XTZ 750 line’s 660 cc relative, and it belongs with other Yamaha singles such as the SRX. More models are in the Yamaha collection.
