History of the Yamaha Jog

The Jog appeared in 1983 and reached North America in 1986. The first American version, the CE50 built for 1986 and 1987, was part of the Riva family and was known in many places as the Riva Jog. Its 49 cc air-cooled two-stroke reed-valve Minarelli single was mounted vertically and produced 4.5 hp and 5.8 N·m, giving a top speed of 35–38 mph. It came in red or yellow for 1986 and red or blue for 1987.

In 1988 Yamaha restyled the scooter completely and gave it the CG50 designation. It kept a vertical Minarelli engine, now with a smaller crankshaft but mostly compatible parts, and was sold in North America from 1988 to 1991 in white and purple, red or black. The CY50 followed in 1992 and had the longest North American run, ending in 2001. It was heavily restyled and switched to a horizontal 49 cc Minarelli engine, raising the stock top speed to 40 mph and 45–48 mph unrestricted. Its seat was not suitable for two passengers.

The CV50 arrived in 2006 as the successor to the CY50. It kept the horizontal Minarelli engine but was completely redesigned, moving from a boxy shape to a more streamlined and curvy one. It was the first Jog to use a front disc brake, because every earlier model had drum brakes at both ends. The Jog has continued in production around the world under the CV50 designation.

Design and features

  • Minarelli engines: vertical units in the early models, horizontal from the CY50 onwards.
  • Model codes: CE50, CG50, CY50 and CV50 mark each redesign.
  • First front disc: the 2006 CV50 finally replaced the all-drum braking of earlier Jogs.
  • Long production: a small scooter built on the same name for more than four decades.
