The Volvo Snabbe and Trygge were light trucks built from 1956 to 1975. The Snabbe was Volvo’s first forward-control truck and used a V8 originally developed for a planned luxury car called the Volvo Philip; the larger Trygge came a few months later.

History of the Volvo Snabbe and Trygge

Volvo introduced its first forward-control truck, the L420 Snabbe, at the end of 1956 with a payload of about three tonnes. Its V8 engine had been developed by Volvo for a planned luxury car called the Volvo Philip in the early 1950s. A V8 in such a light vehicle gave impressive performance, but fuel consumption was dire, and from 1964 the Snabbe was offered with a diesel alternative.

In early 1957 the programme was supplemented by the larger L430 Trygge, with a sturdier chassis and suspension and a payload of about five tonnes. From 1963 the Trygge could be ordered with a more economical diesel, and because Volvo had no engine of its own to offer at that size it bought the 3.6-litre Dorset tractor engine from Ford, whose 65 PS made performance fairly ordinary.

System 8 and after

When Volvo introduced its System 8 in 1965, changes for the smallest trucks were limited to new names: the Snabbe became the F82 and the Trygge the F83. Production of the B36 V8 ended in 1966, taking with it the last petrol engine in a Volvo truck. In 1967 the Ford diesel was replaced by the more powerful Perkins 4.236, which Volvo called the D39.

The last modernisation came in 1972, when the engine was moved forward in the chassis to free space inside the cab and a new black plastic radiator grille was fitted. The trucks were now called F82S and F83S, and the line continued until 1975.

Design and features

  • V8 power: the B36 from the abandoned Volvo Philip luxury car.
  • Forward control: Volvo’s first truck with the cab over the engine.
  • Two sizes: a three-tonne Snabbe and a five-tonne Trygge.
  • Bought-in diesels: a Ford Dorset first, then a Perkins 4.236.
  • System 8 names: F82 and F83, later F82S and F83S.

Volvo Snabbe and Trygge versions

  • L420 Snabbe (1956): V8 petrol light truck.
  • L430 Trygge (1957): larger version with a five-tonne payload.
  • F82 and F83 (1965): renamed under System 8.
  • F82S and F83S (1972): engine moved forward, new grille.

The Snabbe and Trygge were replaced by the larger Volvo F85 and F86 and followed the heavier Volvo Titan. More trucks are in the Volvo collection.
