History of the Terex TFC

Terex was created by General Motors in 1968 as a brand for construction equipment, after a court ruling forced GM to give up the Euclid off-highway truck business. The name came from the Latin terra (earth) and rex (king). GM sold the division to IBH in 1980 and took it back in 1983; from the later 1980s Terex grew as an independent corporation, buying specialist equipment makers.

Cranes and port equipment became one of the group’s branches. Terex Cranes combined the Terex and Demag names, and in 2011 Terex bought 82 per cent of Demag Cranes AG, which included the Gottwald port technology business. The division was renamed Terex Material Handling & Port Solutions, putting container-handling machines alongside the mobile and crawler cranes.

The TFC 45 is a reach stacker, a machine with a telescopic boom and a spreader that grips a container by its corners. Reach stackers are the flexible alternative to gantry cranes in smaller ports and inland terminals: they can lift containers from the ground, stack them and load them onto trucks or wagons without fixed rails. The video shows a TFC 45 in operation, and the photograph shows Terex reach stackers working at Chalon-sur-Saône.
