History of the Suzuki DR350

Air-cooled enduro

The DR350 arrived in 1990 as a simple, air-cooled trail bike in off-road and dual-sport versions. Its 349 cc single had four valves and a single overhead camshaft, and used Suzuki’s Advanced Cooling System and dry-sump lubrication. The gearbox had six speeds, the wheels were 21 inches at the front and 18 at the back, and both brakes were discs, 220 mm front and 200 mm rear.

Electric start

The DR350 and DR350S were kick-start machines until 1994, when the DR350SE added an electric starter. Performance was modest but useful: a quarter mile in 15.1 seconds and a top speed of 140 km/h.

The Djebel branch

In Japan the same family was sold as the Djebel, a trail bike that shared the DR’s role of a light, simple dual-purpose machine and remained popular with riders who wanted a capable bike without the weight of a bigger adventure model.

Design and features

  • Air-cooled simplicity: SACS cooling and a dry sump, with no radiator to damage on the trail.
  • Six speeds: a wide ratio gearbox for road and trail.
  • Long-travel chassis: 21- and 18-inch wheels, disc brakes at both ends.
  • Electric start from 1994: the DR350SE made the bike easier to live with.

Suzuki DR350 versions

  • DR350: the off-road kick-start model.
  • DR350S: the dual-sport version.
  • DR350SE (1994): dual-sport with electric start.
  • Djebel: the Japanese-market trail version.

The DR350 was followed in the range by the DR-Z400, and its trail-bike formula is shared with the TS125. More Suzukis are in the Suzuki collection.
