The DAC 665 was a family of all-wheel-drive military trucks built by the Întreprinderea de Autocamioane Brașov in the 1980s. It was produced in several versions, of which the 665T artillery tractor and the 665G pontoon carrier were the two best known, and it was exported to Hungary, Egypt, Iraq and Cuba.

History of the DAC 665

In the early 1970s Romania began producing trucks under the DAC and ROMAN names. The Romanian Army looked at the ROMAN 12.135DF, but the vehicle did not meet all of the military requirements and was not homologated. The Brașov works then designed two new models for the army, the DAC 665T and the DAC 444T.

The DAC 665 became a family rather than a single vehicle. The 665T was intended for towing artillery pieces and for carrying troops, material and supplies; the 665G was used to transport the pontoons of the Romanian Army’s bridge parks. Both had all-wheel drive, 6×6, and the chassis of the family was also used as the basis of a number of specialised vehicles.

In 1985 an improved version entered production as the DAC 665T Modernizat, Model 1985. The same improvements were applied to the DAC 444T in 1986. The family was exported to Hungary, Egypt, Iraq and Cuba.

Design and features

  • Military purpose: designed to the army’s requirements after the Roman 12.135DF had been rejected.
  • All-wheel drive: 6×6 on both the 665T and the 665G.
  • Two roles: artillery tractor and troop transport on the 665T, pontoon carrier on the 665G.
  • Specialised offspring: the chassis served for several other military vehicles.
  • Modernised version: the 665T Modernizat, Model 1985.

DAC 665 versions

  • DAC 665T: artillery tractor and troop and material transport, 6×6.
  • DAC 665G: pontoon carrier for the army’s bridge parks, 6×6.
  • DAC 665T Modernizat, Model 1985: the improved version from 1985.
  • DAC 444T: the smaller model built alongside the 665, updated in 1986.

The same works built the Roman 10.215 and the heavier Roman 19.215. More in our Roman collection.
