History of the Renault PR100

A Berliet design

The original PR100 was developed and built by Berliet using mainly the plans of the German VÖV standard city bus of the late 1960s, with an altered front and rear. It was 11.23 m long on a 5.6 m wheelbase, with an underfloor engine at the rear and an interior different from the German bus: three variations of seating and standing combinations were offered with two or three doors. At first it used a Perkins V8.510 diesel of 178 PS; by 1973 a Berliet diesel was available as the PR100.PB, and from 1979 the bus carried the Renault badge.

Updates

The PR100 was meant to be replaced by the Renault R312 in 1987, but sales continued with a revised model, the PR100.2 of 1984, which had a slightly altered front end and technical improvements. In 1993 came the further revised PR112, with the last delivery in 1999. An articulated version, the Renault PR180, was produced from 1980.

Design and features

  • VÖV inspiration: German standard city bus plans with a French front and rear.
  • Underfloor rear engine: a Perkins diesel at first, then Berliet and Renault units.
  • Articulated PR180: an 18-metre version added in 1980.
  • Long life: nearly thirty years of production despite the planned 1987 replacement.
