The Porsche Cayenne is a luxury crossover SUV made by Porsche since 2002. The first generation, known inside Porsche as the Type 9PA or 955 and later 957, was the company’s first V8 vehicle since the 928 was dropped in 1995, its first off-road vehicle since the Super and Junior tractors of the 1950s, and the first production Porsche with four doors.

History of the Porsche Cayenne
The Cayenne entered the market in 2002 to a mixed reception, but it proved to have excellent performance for an SUV, with comparably good handling and powerful engines. The range began with the V8-powered Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo, and VR6 and diesel versions joined later in the model cycle. In eight model years of the first generation, 276,652 cars were built. The name was coined by Manfred Gotta.

The base Cayenne used a 3.2-litre VR6 of 250 PS, with a Porsche-specific intake manifold but otherwise largely the Volkswagen unit; it reached 100 km/h in 9.1 seconds with the manual gearbox and 9.7 seconds with the Tiptronic S. The Cayenne S of the pre-facelift 955 had a 4.5-litre V8 with a wet sump and variable valve timing, producing 340 PS and 420 N·m, reaching 97 km/h in 6.9 seconds and 241 km/h. A one-year Cayenne S Titanium Edition for 2006 added an aluminium bonnet, titanium-coloured trim, 19-inch wheels, bi-xenon lights and a sport-tuned suspension on the same 335 hp engine, reaching 97 km/h in 6.2 seconds.
The first-generation Cayenne Turbo produced 450 PS and reached 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. In 2006 a Turbo S was added to compete with the Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG: a twin-turbocharged 4.5-litre V8 of 521 PS and 720 N·m, 5.0 seconds to 97 km/h and 269 km/h, with the six-speed Tiptronic S. Turbo and Turbo S cars also came with a low-range transfer case, a locking differential and height-adjustable off-road suspension.
For 2008 came the facelifted 9PA, the 957, which stayed in production into the 2010 model year. The base engine became a 3.6-litre VR6 of 290 hp; the S received a direct-injection 4.8-litre V8 of 385 PS and 500 N·m with VarioCam Plus, combining variable valve timing with two-stage valve lift on the inlet side, for 6.6 seconds to 100 km/h and 250 km/h. A 4.8-litre Turbo of 500 PS was revealed at the Beijing show in 2008.
The 957 also brought the first Cayenne GTS, offered only in that updated body between 2008 and 2010 and the first Porsche of the modern era to carry the GTS badge. Its 4.8-litre V8 produced 405 PS, it had a purpose-developed sports chassis with lowered suspension, a sports exhaust, 21-inch wheels as standard and a factory wide-body kit, and a six-speed manual was optional; it reached 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds and 253 km/h. The second generation, Type 92A, arrived at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show sharing its platform, body frame, doors and electronics with the Volkswagen Touareg and Audi Q7, and it gained a plug-in E-Hybrid version after the 2014 facelift. Every Cayenne combustion engine has used direct injection since 2008, the third generation came in 2017 with a 2023 refresh, and a fourth, electric-only Cayenne was unveiled in November 2025.
