History of the Pontiac Strato-Streak

Design and layout

The Strato-Streak was built for the 1954 Motorama as a fibreglass four-door hardtop. Its styling was inspired by Pontiac’s Catalina and it sat on Star Chief underpinnings, with a 124-inch wheelbase and a height of just 54.7 inches. It had four swivel bucket seats to make entry easier and no central B-pillar, with the four doors opening from the centre outwards. Because the rear doors opened into the wind, they were fitted with special locks that prevented them from opening unless the car was stopped and in neutral. The interior was finished in beige leather and gold metallic nylon, and the controls for safety and convenience equipment were grouped on the transmission tunnel.

Names and legacy

The car was first finished in metallic green and later repainted iridescent metallic red and renamed the Strato Streak II. The Strato-Streak name was then used for Pontiac’s small-block overhead-valve V8 engines from 1955 to 1957. The concept was the stage for the launch of that V8 and for a marketing approach inspired by the Space Race, which later shaped the Bonneville, Grand Prix and GTO.

Design and features

  • Fibreglass body: a four-door hardtop without a B-pillar.
  • Centre-opening doors: rear doors with safety locks that worked only when stopped.
  • Swivel seats: four bucket seats that turned for easier entry.
  • Tunnel controls: accessory switches grouped on the transmission tunnel.
  • V8 launch: the car introduced the engine that took Pontiac into performance.

Pontiac Strato-Streak versions

  • Strato-Streak (1954): the metallic green original.
  • Strato Streak II: the same car repainted iridescent red.

The Strato-Streak previewed the V8 used in the Star Chief and Bonneville, and followed the Club de Mer tradition of Pontiac show cars. More Pontiacs are in the Pontiac collection.
