History of the Oldsmobile Profile

A compact wagon with sliding doors

The Profile was shown in 2000 as a compact wagon with five seats and rear sliding doors, a body style that combined the space of a small van with the shape of an estate car. Under the bonnet was a supercharged 3.5 L V6 of 250 horsepower, driving all four wheels, with traction control as part of the package.

Controls and technology

The gear selector was a rotary knob on the dashboard, which freed the console for storage, and the transmission could be shifted manually with buttons on the steering wheel. A smart-card keyless ignition applied all the personal driver adjustments — seat, radio, mirrors and steering wheel — as soon as the driver got in. The car also carried hands-free telephone communication, internet access, on-board vehicle diagnostics and a DVD entertainment system with displays in the rear headrests.

Design and features

  • Sliding rear doors: a compact wagon with van-style access.
  • Supercharged V6: 3.5 litres and 250 horsepower with all-wheel drive.
  • Rotary gear selector: a dash-mounted knob instead of a console lever.
  • Smart card: keyless ignition that restores each driver’s settings.

Oldsmobile Profile versions

  • Profile (2000): the only version built, a single show car.

The Profile was a compact concept from the same period as the O4 and the Alero. More models are in the Oldsmobile collection.
