History of the McCormick C95

The McCormick name goes back to Cyrus McCormick’s reaper works of 1847 and to International Harvester, formed in 1902 from the merger of the McCormick and Deering companies. International Harvester sold its farm equipment division to Tenneco’s Case Corporation in 1985 and the tractors became Case IH; the McCormick brand itself was dropped at that point.

The C series was one of the Case IH lines built at Doncaster, the English plant that had made tractors for International Harvester and then Case IH. When Case and New Holland proposed their merger into CNH Global in 1999, the European Union required the sale of the Doncaster works as a condition. ARGO bought the plant and the brand rights to McCormick in 2000, and with them the rights to the C, CX and MX-C models and a licence for the MX Maxxum. McCormick Tractors International Limited started trading in January 2001.

In 2001 ARGO also bought the Saint-Dizier factory in France from CNH Global, which became the base of McCormick France, and in December of that year McCormick International USA was set up near Vermeer in Pella, Iowa. In December 2006 ARGO announced the closure of Doncaster, with the loss of about 325 jobs, and in 2007 all McCormick tractor production moved to Fabbrico in Italy, the former Landini plant. The last tractor built at Doncaster, on 14 December 2007, was an XTX series machine.

Since 2007 Landini, McCormick and Valpadana have been brands of ARGO Tractors rather than separate manufacturers, and their tractors are built as a common line in Italy. The group kept investing in its European sales network, with subsidiaries in Spain in 2017, France in 2019 and Poland in 2021, and in Germany and Austria the brand sold 210 tractors in 2022 and 253 in 2023.
