History of the Maruti Wagon R
First generation
The first-generation Wagon R was introduced in India on 18 December 1999. Based on the Wagon R kei car sold in Japan, it was Maruti’s answer to the newly arrived Hyundai Santro. It quickly gained popularity because it offered much more interior space than its size suggested, including room for tall passengers, and because it came with power windows and power steering — luxuries in India in 1999. Power came from Suzuki’s 1.1-litre F10D petrol engine with 64 bhp at 6200 rpm and 84 Nm at 3500 rpm.

Facelift and DUO
A minor facelift in 2004 brought a chrome line in the grille, body-coloured bumpers and clear-lens tail lamps, while the interior received a beige dashboard with plenty of storage spaces. In 2006 Suzuki launched an LPG version called the DUO for F10D-engined cars, giving owners the option of running on petrol, LPG or both. The car also received aesthetic changes with a redesigned grille and tailgate and accents of chrome. Around 880,000 examples of the first generation were sold.
Second generation
The second-generation Wagon R was introduced on 23 April 2010 in New Delhi. It used a brand-new platform carried over from the fourth-generation Japanese Wagon R, and its overall length grew to 3,595 mm, an increase of 75 mm, on a 2,400 mm wheelbase; width and height were mostly unchanged. Safety equipment such as ABS, airbags and fog lamps was limited to the top variant, and the range consisted of LX, LXi and VXi trims. The Indian Wagon R 1.0 was powered by the three-cylinder 998 cc K10B engine with 68 PS at 6200 rpm and 90 Nm at 3500 rpm, the same engine used in the A-Star, Estilo and Alto K10. A five-speed version with ABS as standard was added in the VXi trim, and ABS became an option across the range.
Stingray and later updates
The first facelift of this generation arrived on 14 January 2013 with a narrower grille, restyled bumpers with larger vents and a new fog lamp housing; inside there was a dual glove box and an integrated Eagle Wings music system with USB and AUX ports. In 2014 Maruti introduced the Wagon R Stingray, a restyled version with a bolder fascia and projector headlamps, a first for the segment; the Stingray name was later dropped and the car became the Wagon R VXi+. In 2015 a five-speed automated manual transmission, called AGS, replaced the ageing three-speed automatic. The third-generation Indian Wagon R is unrelated to later Japanese versions and was built from the ground up on the HEARTECT platform. The car is also exported to Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka without the Maruti name, and the Indian design was rebadged for Indonesia as the Karimun Wagon R.
