History of the Mahindra Xylo
Mahindra announced the project, codenamed Ingenio, in 2006. It was meant to compete in India with the Toyota Innova and the Chevrolet Tavera, and it cost the company about Rs 550 crore. Production started at the Nashik plant in December 2008, the Xylo was launched on 13 January 2009 and sales began in March; more than 3,000 units were sold in the first full month, although sales declined afterwards.

The Xylo was loosely based on the ladder-frame platform of the Mahindra Scorpio, modified for a longer wheelbase and for better refinement. It came with several seating layouts, either eight seats in two rows of benches or seven with captain’s chairs in the middle row, and some trim levels had dual front airbags and ABS with EBD. Four-wheel-drive versions were tested but never put on sale.
A comprehensive update arrived in 2012 with new transmissions and the modern 2.2-litre mHawk turbo-diesel for the higher trim levels, along with revised suspension, a restyled front, smoked rear lights, blacked-out window pillars and leather trim on the H9. Sales passed 100,000 units in June 2012, and in early 2015 the range ran from D2 to H9. The Xylo was also sold in South Africa, Colombia and parts of Asia and North Africa, and Mahindra announced in June 2019 that it would be discontinued because of stricter crash and BS-VI emission rules, to be replaced by the Marazzo.
Design and features
- Scorpio underpinnings: a modified ladder frame with a longer wheelbase than the SUV it came from.
- Flexible seating: seven seats with captain’s chairs or eight on two benches.
- mHawk power: the 2.2-litre turbo-diesel arrived with the 2012 facelift.
- Practical MPV: aimed squarely at taxi and family buyers who would otherwise choose an Innova.
Mahindra Xylo versions
- Pre-facelift (2009–2012): the original range, seven or eight seats.
- Facelift (2012–2019): 2.2-litre mHawk engine, new transmissions and restyled front.
- Trim levels: D2, D4, H6, H8 and H9 as offered in January 2015.
The Xylo shared its ladder frame with the Scorpio and was the people-carrier alternative to the Bolero. More in the Mahindra collection.
