The Jeep Commander is a nameplate rather than a single model. Jeep has used it since 2005 for three separate SUVs: a mid-size seven-seater built from 2005 to 2010, a mid-size crossover based on the Compass and sold outside the United States and Canada from 2021, and the Grand Commander made for China from 2018 to 2022.

History of the Jeep Commander
One name, three cars
The Commander badge first appeared in 2005 on a mid-size SUV that Jeep built until 2010. The name then disappeared from the range for a decade. It returned in 2021 on a mid-size crossover based on the Jeep Compass, produced for markets outside the United States and Canada and badged as the Commander. In China the same period brought the Grand Commander, a mid-size crossover made from 2018 to 2022, whose two-row version was itself sold as the Jeep Commander until 2020.

Why the name moved
The three cars have little in common beyond the badge: the first was a large, square-rigged SUV, while the later two are crossovers and the Chinese car shares its platform with the Compass family. The pattern follows Jeep’s wider range, where nameplates such as Cherokee and Compass have also been reused across platforms and markets.
Design and features
- Three separate models: the XK SUV, the Compass-based crossover and the Chinese Grand Commander.
- Market split: the 2021 crossover is not sold in the United States or Canada.
- Two-row variant: the Chinese Grand Commander was badged Commander until 2020.
Jeep Commander versions
- Commander XK (2005–2010): the mid-size SUV with the original badge.
- Commander (2021–): the Compass-based crossover outside North America.
- Grand Commander (2018–2022): the Chinese crossover, Commander-badged in two-row form to 2020.
The Commander is one of the larger Jeep models, alongside the Grand Cherokee, the Cherokee and the Compass on which the 2021 car is based. More models are in the Jeep collection.
