History of the Hyosung GT650

The GT650 sits at the top of Hyosung’s GT family, above the 125 and 250 cc versions, and was offered with three levels of bodywork. The naked GT650 left the engine and frame on show, the GT650S added a half fairing and the GT650R was fully faired. All three used the same V-twin engine, and the same unit also powered the GV650 Aquila cruiser.

Cycle World recorded a 0 to 60 mph time of 4.2 seconds and a quarter mile of 12.84 seconds at 102.22 mph, figures that put the fully faired bike among the quicker machines in its class. The engine is a V-twin of the kind Hyosung developed with a layout close to the Suzuki SV650; the cruiser version uses the same engine but with a belt rather than a chain and a five-speed gearbox instead of six.

The GT650 was the largest of the Comet models and shared its chassis thinking with the smaller GT250, which used a frame sized along the same lines. In the Hyosung range it was the sporting alternative to the cruiser-styled GV650, which used the same powerplant in a completely different chassis.

Design and features

  • Three body styles: naked GT650, half-faired GT650S and fully faired GT650R, all on the same mechanicals.
  • Shared V-twin: the same engine as the GV650 cruiser, tuned for the sport bikes.
  • Chain drive: the sport models use a chain, while the cruiser version of the engine drives by belt.
  • Tested performance: 4.2 seconds to 60 mph and a 12.84-second quarter mile in Cycle World testing.
