History of the HSV Avalanche
A new kind of HSV
The Avalanche was not a sports sedan but an all-wheel-drive crossover SUV, produced from 2003 to 2005 and based on the Holden Adventra LX8 crossover wagon. The range also incorporated a dual-cab utility model known as the Avalanche XUV, derived from the Holden Crewman Cross8. It was built over two series, VY from 2003 to 2005 and VZ in 2005.
The VY connection
The Avalanche arrived in the middle of the VY Commodore’s life. That series was released in September 2002 and produced until August 2004, with a Series II from August 2003, and it was the third iteration of the third generation of the Commodore. It was also the series in which the range saw the introduction of the first Commodore-based all-wheel-drive variants, including the Holden Adventra (VY) wagon — the car on which the Avalanche was based.
Short life and legacy
The Avalanche was one of HSV’s shortest-lived lines, lasting only from 2003 to 2005 and sharing its place in the range with the company’s traditional rear-drive V8 sedans and utes. After the VZ series of 2005 it was not continued, and HSV returned to the sports models on which its reputation was built.
Design and features
- All-wheel drive: the Avalanche was an all-wheel-drive crossover rather than a rear-drive V8 sedan.
- Adventra basis: it was built on the Holden Adventra LX8 crossover wagon of the VY range.
- XUV utility: the range included a dual-cab utility version derived from the Holden Crewman Cross8.
- Two series: sold as a VY from 2003 to 2005 and as a VZ in 2005.
HSV Avalanche versions
- Avalanche VY (2003–2005): the original crossover SUV on the Adventra LX8.
- Avalanche VZ (2005): the second and final series.
- Avalanche XUV: dual-cab utility version based on the Crewman Cross8.
The Avalanche was a departure from the V8 sedans and utes of the range, such as the Clubsport R8; more HSV models are in the HSV collection.
