History of the HSV Clubsport R8
The ClubSport before the R8
The ClubSport was launched in the VN series in June 1990 with the Holden V8 at 180 kW (241 hp), and has been HSV’s highest-volume model since. The VP ClubSport of October 1991 kept that output, while the VP ClubSport 5000i of May 1993 made 200 kW (268 hp). The VR and VS ClubSports used the Holden V8 at 185 kW (248 hp), and the VR series also offered a ClubSport wagon. The VT Series ClubSport of September 1997 came with the 5.0-litre Holden V8 at 195 kW (261 hp) in Series I form.

The R8 arrives
The R8 was introduced in the VT Series II ClubSport of 1999, when the 5.0-litre engine gave way to the 5.7-litre LS1 at 250 kW (335 hp). A Hackett special edition was built between August and September 2000. The VX Series ClubSport of 2000 raised the LS1 to 255 kW (342 hp); the Y Series of October 2002 reached 260 kW (349 hp), the Y II 285 kW (382 hp) and added a limited-run ClubSport SE; and the Z Series of October 2004 adopted the 6.0-litre LS2 at 297 kW (398 hp). In July 2005 HSV offered the Clubsport and Clubsport R8 ‘Dealer Team Spec’ with Stage 1 and optional Stage 2 packages, manual only.
E Series and Gen-F
The E Series ClubSport of September 2006 came with the LS2 at 307 kW (412 hp), changing to the LS3 at 317 kW (425 hp) in April 2008. In September 2008 HSV launched the ClubSport R8 Tourer on the VE Sportwagon, and the E Series 3 of 2011 added a bi-fuel option running on LPG and petrol, which was not offered on the wagon. The Gen-F ClubSport of 2013 had the LS3 at 317 kW, with the ClubSport R8 at 325 kW (436 hp); the MY15 update took the base car to 325 kW and the R8 to 340 kW (460 hp). In 2016 the ClubSport R8 LSA appeared with the supercharged LSA at 400 kW (540 hp), and the ClubSport was discontinued in 2017.
Exports
The ClubSport was sold in New Zealand without rebranding. The Vauxhall VXR8 was launched in Britain in 2007 on the E Series ClubSport R8; the VXR8 Bathurst S of 2009 used the LS2 at 421 kW (565 bhp), and in 2010 the VXR8 switched to the HSV GTS as its base. From 2008 the CSV CR8 was built for the Middle East, based on the E Series ClubSport R8 and, unlike earlier HSV exports, in left-hand drive.
