The first-generation Mobilio was released on 21 December 2001 as a 1.5-litre compact MPV designed with recreational activities in mind. It was the second model in Honda’s Small Max series and used the Global Small Platform with the i-DSI engine. According to Honda it had the best fuel rating in the seven-passenger class at 17.2 km/L.

Packaging and safety

The Mobilio had a cargo area 1.86 m deep and 1.10 m tall that could be configured in five modes: utility, long, twin, refresh and adjustment. It had sliding doors on both sides and tailgate storage hooks rated for about 5 kg. Honda’s G-CON technology was designed to protect occupants in a 55 km/h full-frontal collision, a 64 km/h front offset collision, a 55 km/h side collision and a 50 km/h rear collision, and Honda also ran its own vehicle-to-vehicle test with a 50 percent frontal offset at 50 km/h against a two-tonne vehicle. To improve recyclability almost all interior injection-moulded parts were made of olefin resin, helping the car exceed 90 percent overall recyclability.

End and revival

The first generation was discontinued in May 2008 after the Freed was introduced. A second-generation Mobilio based on the Brio appeared in September 2013 and went on sale in January 2014 for several emerging markets.

Design and features

  • Seven seats in a small body: a mini MPV rather than a full-size van.
  • Five cargo modes: utility, long, twin, refresh and adjustment.
  • Sliding doors on both sides: practical for tight parking.
  • G-CON safety structure: Honda’s crash-protection technology.

Honda Mobilio versions

  • First generation (2001–2008): the Japan-only Mobilio.
  • Freed (2008): the replacement model.
  • Second generation (2013): the Brio-based car for emerging markets.

The Mobilio shares Honda’s small-car platform with the Honda Fit and City, and sits below the Stepwgn. More Hondas are in the Honda collection.
